We spent 20 days traveling through Mexico with the founders of Volando Tequila. While the brand was already established, they continue to return to Mexico to deepen their understanding of it. To slow down, listen, and spend time in the places and with the people who give tequila its meaning.

The journey began in Sayulita with a road-trip mindset. Surfboards strapped on, long drives ahead, and no fixed plan. From there, we traveled inland to Tequila, learning the history behind the drink and paying homage by sharing Volando in the oldest bar in town.

We worked the agave fields alongside jimadors, learning what the labor actually demands. We walked the distillery at Casa Aceves, seeing the process from the inside and understanding the time, patience, and care required to do it right.

At Rancho Sol Dorado, we lived ranch life. Early mornings started with horseback rides and cowboy coffees, coffee laced with tequila. Meals were shared, stories exchanged, and time was spent alongside the people who know this land best. It wasn’t curated. It was real.

We stopped in San Miguel de Allende for a clay sculpting class, slowing our hands and learning something entirely new, a reminder that craft takes many forms.

The trip ended in Mexico City the same way many meaningful things do. Around a shared table. Tacos passed back and forth, games played, stories told, and a deeper respect for the culture, the craft, and the communities behind tequila. This journey wasn’t about launching something new. It was about grounding Volando Tequila in the place it truly belongs.
