Spectre Dive Boat
VENTURA COUNTY, CA
Brand system + ongoing creative · Ventura, CA
Spectre is a premier dive charter operating year-round out of Ventura Harbor — single-day trips to Channel Islands National Park aboard an 85-foot aluminum vessel. Three dives, BBQ on deck, hot tub on the way home.
The Design Kollective owns the entire creative function. Brand strategy, identity, photography, voice, web, marketing, and merch — every Spectre touchpoint runs through one studio.
What we delivered
A 31-page brand guidelines manual — wordmark, voice, palette, typography, photography direction, motion, layout, and applications
A full identity system — primary wordmark, original heritage badge, SDB stamp, plus a brand-owned diver-down flag graphic
Voice and copy rules — declarative, equipment-grade, "the voice of an operator, not a marketer"
Photography & Videography — documentary, no stock, no staged smiles
Web design and build for spectreboat.com, spectreboatgear.com, diveguideschannelislands.com, and spectresnorkel.com
Three sub-brands: Spectre Snorkel (the family-friendly day trip business, separate guidelines), Dive Guides Channel Islands (also separate guidelines) and Spectre Boat Gear (merch with multiple collection identities)
How the project works
The brief was a comprehensive rebrand. Spectre wanted every surface — site, social, signage, merch, deckhand t-shirt — to sound like the same operator. We built a brand system from the inside out: strategy first, voice second, visual identity third, then web, photography direction, and merch.
The governance was the differentiator. Most studios hand off pieces of a brand to specialists. With Spectre, design, photography, strategy, marketing, and merch all live under one studio. Nothing outsourced. Nothing lost in translation.
The voice rule sums it up: direct, declarative, plain — the voice of an operator, not a marketer. Same goes for how we built the system.
